The DVMLG supports logic events in German-speaking countries and organises its own logic conference, the Colloquium Logicum, every two years. The general meeting also takes place regularly at this conference. Since 2002, the Colloquium Logicum also includes a doctoral colloquium under the name PhD Colloquium.

This year’s Colloquium Logicum will take place from 7 to 9 October at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Doktor-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna).

Call for Abstracts

The programme committee invites the submission of abstracts for talks in all fields of research covered by the DVMLG. In order to submit an abstract, please send the following information to dvmlg@dvmlg.de in the body of an e-mail (do not send attachments) by 14 July 2024:

1. Name and e-mail address of the speaker;
2. title of the talk;
3. abstract (at least one sentence; at most 200 words).

If there are still slots for talks available after the deadline of 14 July 2024, we may accept late submissions until the programme is filled.

Awarding of the Zermelo Ring

The Zermelo Ring will be awarded for the first time on Monday afternoon. Ernst Zermelo (1871-1953) was one of the co-founders of modern set theory – the so-called Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms, which represent the commonly used axiomatic foundation of mathematics – bear his name, but his scientific work also includes work on the calculus of variations, applied mathematics and physics. In 2022, the DVMLG decided “to award the Ernst Zermelo Ring every four years to an active researcher in the foundations of mathematics who has had a lasting influence on the development of the field and who can be expected to remain active and influential in the years to come”. This is the signet ring of Ernst Zermelo’s grandfather. Zermelo’s widow bequeathed this ring to the logician Heinz-Dieter Ebbinghaus, who gave it to the Freiburg University Archives and initiated the organisation of this prize by the DVMLG. The person to be honoured will be chosen by a prize committee appointed by the DVMLG board, consisting of Steffen Lempp (University of Wisconsin, Madison), Benedikt Löwe (Cambridge University/University of Hamburg), Michael Rathjen (University of Leeds), Katrin Tent (University of Münster).

The Birth of Set Theory

The year 2024 marks the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of set theory: In the article ‘Ueber eine Eigenschaft des Inbegriffes aller reellen algebraischen Zahlen’ in 1874, Georg Cantor proved for the first time that the set of real numbers is uncountable and thus founded the field of set theory. To celebrate this occasion, the DVMLG is coordinating a translation project of Georg Cantor’s original work and some German-language secondary texts into English. At the Colloquium Logicum 2024, Clara List and Benedikt Löwe will talk about the anniversary and the translation project.

Young Academy Distinguished Lecture

The conference will be followed by a Young Academy Distinguished Lecture by Hugh Woodin (Harvard University) at the ÖAW. More information can be found at https://www.oeaw.ac.at/detail/news/the-young-academy-distinguished-lecture-series.
